Project Objective

To build and maintain a wireless network infrastructure for The Ohio State University Columbus campus that supports growth over 5 years to a minimum of 2,300 access points and 45,000 concurrent users.  In addition, TELR (Technology Enhanced Learning & Research), through collaboration with the colleges, will deliver a best practices wireless instructional technologies website and sponsor a series of professional development opportunities for IT staff and faculty.

 

Funding Commitments

·         Funding reallocation to colleges and departments underway

·         Project Directors will visit with all colleges, selected support units and student governments

·         Annual accounting of budget activities required

·         TELR pedagogy support initiatives are funded separately thru the Office of the CIO

 

Project Phases

 

Year 1

·         Initial build of wireless network infrastructure

·         Coverage of primary student gathering areas

·         Develop assessment plans for academic unit wireless learning environment pilots

·         Develop instructional strategies training plans for instructors and professional development plans for IT support staff

·         Estimated total of 634 access points for Year 1:

            400 project funded access points for primary student gathering areas

            234 access points available for purchase by colleges and dept

·         Result: Wireless hotspot locations around Columbus campus

 

Year 2 and beyond

·         Expansion of wireless network based on colleges & support units purchasing access points through the project; also includes expansion of the infrastructure and maintenance of solution

·        Disseminate and continue to update assessment plans for college wireless instructional pilots and implementation

·        Deliver instructional strategies training to instructors and provide professional development opportunities for IT support staff

·         Estimate an additional 1,666 access points over this timeframe purchased by colleges & departments

·         Estimate additional 35,400 concurrent users over this timeframe

·         Result: increase of access points, coverage (mobility), concurrent user base and RF management

 

Project Exclusions

·         In building wireless deployment including customer owned Access Points, and wiring

·         Purchase of customer wireless capable devices

·         Regional campuses Access Points and wireless infrastructure

·         Low use spaces

·         Provisions for General public including fans at sporting events, transient population, bus tours, etc.

·         Off Campus wireless access

 

Project Governance Structure

Project Governance Structure was unveiled at the Wireless Summit on March 10, 2005. As of 4/1/05, representatives have been identified thru Deans, VP’s and Administrators to participate on the various project governance structure committees. Committees began meeting May 2005.
